Contemporary Anishinaabe Art: A Continuation
***Although this event is not part of Great Lakes Shamanic Community, we Love to promote Native American traditions of the Great Lakes.
Contemporary Anishinaabe Art: A Continuation celebrates the enduring cultures and creative achievements of over 60 Anishinaabe artists from across the Great Lakes region. These artists represent a continuation of Anishinaabe creativity, which has been ongoing for centuries. One of the largest presentations of contemporary Native American art in the Midwest and the first major Native American exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 30 years, this exhibition challenges perceptions about what Native American art can be, how it should be seen, and how it can be interpreted.
Curated with the guidance from an advisory council of Ojibwe (Chippewa), Ottawa (Odawa), and Potawatomi (Pottawatomi) artists, the exhibition features a diverse scope of more than 90 works — basketry, beadwork, birchbark artistry, clothing, film, graphic design, jewelry, painting, pottery, sculpture, and woodwork — and highlights the unique histories and perspectives of the Anishinaabe people. The exhibition's gallery labels will be translated into Anishinaabemowin, an original language of the Great Lakes region and North America.
Visitors who show tribal-issued identification during the run of this exhibition (Sept. 28, 2025 – April 5, 2026) will receive free admission to the DIA, thanks to support from The Rush Group of Companies. Children who do not have a tribal ID will also be admitted for free when accompanied by an adult with a valid tribal ID.

INTENT : EAST LODGE
How do we fully assume authority for our self-growth with hope and joy as human beings? We gain strong self-worth and self-love by the virtue of our works – especially by and through how we dedicate ourselves to a meaningful expression of self-growth. To accomplish meaningful growth, we must learn how to be focused on the highest and most desirable outcome that produces maturity within ourselves for the benefit of others in any circumstance. To achieve and enjoy this kind of skilled self-worth, we must become trustworthy to ourselves. This purification lodge will provide an opportunity for participants to do ceremony that empowers self-trust.
Food is welcome for sharing in social gathering after the lodge.
We look forward to being in ceremony with you!

Community Purification Lodge - CANCELLED
CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER.
Dear Medicine Family,
The Great Lakes Shamanic Community purification lodge scheduled for February 7th has been cancelled in anticipation of another bitterly cold Saturday. Someone suggested we provide an at-home prayer ceremony, maybe even one we could send to the wider community, and asked if I would create one. In my experience, when events in the world and our personal lives are too much to bear, it’s good to go to Spirit and lay down our burdens. So here it is.
Smudge. Call to Spirit in any way you choose- perhaps facing the 4 directions in turn, or on your knees facing any direction you choose. Ask your relations who love you to come and be with you. The very act of calling them reminds us we are never alone, no matter how hard things may seem.
Pour your heart out- your fears, your frustrations, your grief, your rage….Censor nothing. Spirit can take it. And don’t make words do all the work. Some things can only be cried about; others move best with sound alone. Lay it down until you feel something shift. You’ll know when you’re done.
Now take a breath. Remember who you are and the beauty you carry. Send blessings out into the world, into all the dark and sore places; radiate connection, hope and love with all the “you are not alone” energy you can muster. Let the breath of Spirit carry it for you. Know that people all over the world are doing the same thing, in their own way, sending blessings to you. This eternal lifeforce energy always surrounds us- we just need to open to it.
Take three final breaths.
With the first, exhale Peace.
With the second, exhale Hope.
With the third, exhale Love.
Thank all your relations and close your ceremony.
I haven’t said anything here that you didn’t already know. But sometimes if helps to remind each other that Spirit is here for us.
Sending love your way, Debbie

Community Purification Lodge
“Come gather ‘round people wherever you roam
And admit that the waters around you have grown
And accept it that soon You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin’
And you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’”
~Bob Dylan
I am thinking ‘stone canoe’ for getting to the other side. And heated stones for a Purification Lodge in Michigan in January all roasty toasty warm, just right for going deep.
In January it is usually cold and dark. Here is the thing, we are already coming into the Light! The longest night is behind us. What did you, are you harvesting from the dark? Is it time to birth yet? All aboard the Stone Canoe to the land of the next turn of your spiral.
My Sister said tonight that after the shock of the most grievous time of her life, a grief that is the depth and breath of her, when the days became more than eternal tears and heart wrenching loss she was calling on the Creator praying that she did not loose her Joy. ‘Please let me get through the intense parts and then the every day parts with my Joy with me.’
With the Community of this Purification Lodge as our witness, let us go deep, let us go wide, let us go high and low and meet our Joy in these Changing times.
Being Present to the Presence of I-Joy.
There is NO CHARGE FOR CEREMONY.
BRING MEDICINE GIFTS for the Dance Chief, Fire Chief and Fire Crew (4-5) as we do heart/medicine gifting to honor the energy that has been spent on our behalf. Donations for lodge maintenance are always appreciated.

Autumn Olive Removal Party
Autumn Olives are beautiful, fragrant trees with delicious and nutritious berries. They are also a highly invasive species. They spread rapidly and crowd out native plants and make the land unusable for plants, animals and humans. Much of the land we used for Ceremony is now crowded by Autumn Olives!
For those of you interested in joining the Autumn Olive Removal Party on the Michigan Ceremonial Land, we will meet on October 16th-18th (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) to get a good start on the Fall clean-up. If you are able, join in the defense of our beautiful ceremonial land, native trees and plants on one of those days or all of them.
Things to bring:
Chain Saws
Loppers
Hand Loppers
Work Gloves
Drinking Water
Insect Repellant
Sunscreen
Lunch and healthy snacks
What to wear: I recommend you wear heavy duty long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Autumn Olives have thick sharp thorns that can easily pierce and snag thin clothing.
Potluck: We will finish each day with a community meal. Bring your favorite beverages for self and sharing! Sign up so I’ll know who’s coming and when! Let me know if you have any food allergies or intolerances. You can also email me if you need information or clarification or you're seeking housing for the weekend.
Let your friends know about it too! They might be interested in joining a group of hearty individuals such as us for fun in nature?
I’m looking forward to seeing you there!
